It's hard to overstate how massive of a leap the invention of the computer was.

Throughout human history people have invented many things that have made certain things that are valuable to us easier, faster or more durable. Modernity and the industrial evolution has given this a significant boost as well when it comes to physical matters.

But nothing in the realm of the physical comes anywhere close to the scalability that computers have brought to mathematical problems. Take the search for perfect numbers as an example.

So one could only define a leap of this magnitude as an innovation that enables us to do something of value that simply wasn't in the realm of possibilities prior.
